Yoga in Daily Life is a not-for-profit incorporated Association and humanitarian NGO in roster Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. The Association was established in 1991 and its activities are aimed to serve humankind by fostering health, world peace, humanitarian aid, protection of the environment and all creatures, tolerance, respect and freedom among religions, cultures and nations. • On a local level the Australian Association of Yoga in Daily Life supports humanitarian work in the community, with volunteer instructors conducting classes for intellectually disabled adults at institutions; for senior citizens in aged-homes; for inmates of prisons; for the terminally ill and carers at Palliative Care units of hospitals; and for children. • On a national level the Australian Association of Yoga in Daily Life, frequently collaborates with other Australian organisations to support fundraising initiatives and raise community awareness on matters related to health, healthy-lifestyle, the environment, multi-faith and social welfare. The Red Cross, The Cancer Council, Oxfam Community Aid Abroad, Amnesty International, The Australia-Tibet Council, WSPA, STARRTS as well as variety of other local and state government departments are a sample of organisations . • On an international level the Australian Association of Yoga in Daily Life is in roster consultative status with ECOSOC of the United Nations. The Australian Association of Yoga in Daily Life was present at the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, launching its Type II Initiative for Desert Rainwater Harvesting. This initiative is a grass-roots project aimed to address the urgent water crisis griping the drought-stricken regions of Rajasthan, India. In this region ‘Yoga in Daily Life’ has also begun to address the issues of health and school education amongst poor communities, with the philosophy that: Every child has an equal right to education. No child with a wish to study should be denied that wish due to its family’s financial or community status. Established in Sydney since November 1991, the Yoga in Daily Life Association purchased its National Centre in Annandale in April 1996, and the Queensland State Centre in Fortitude Valley, in December 1997. These two locations are the hub of all ‘Yoga in Daily Life’ works in Australia, offering all areas of the community a positive foundation for holistic health. Our network branches into the local and wider community in all states of Australia, via programs in stress reduction and lifestyle management, taught in the Health & Welfare Sector, Aged Care Programs for the elderly, the Education Sector, as well as Correctional Services. ‘Yoga in Daily Life’ also provides ongoing classes for the Corporate and Public Sector. Yoga & Health workshops & Specialty classes are held for children with special needs, such as wheelchair bound teenagers, and children with life-threatening illness. The National Centre in Sydney and the Queensland State Centre in Brisbane, conduct in-house Teacher Training. Over a period of 24 months, budding Yoga Teachers learn the fundamentals of all aspects of yoga teaching, its practice and philosophy, and how to teach yoga in various locations and situations such as gyms, offices, schools, hospitals, respite centres and prisons. Each of the full-time ‘Yoga in Daily Life’ centres in Australia, offer classes six days a week to the general public including Prenatal Yoga and classes for Children. In peak seasons, the Sydney and Brisbane locations receive approximately 1,200 yoga students per month, with regular and students anew testifying to the benefits of Yoga, Relaxation & Meditation. ‘Yoga in Daily Life’ is actively associated with a number of other humanitarian organisations such as the Earth Charter, Oxfam Community Aid Abroad, World Society for the Protection of Animals, the Sustainable Living throughout the south-pacific region and is involved in Festivals & Expos as a representative for the larger Yoga Community. With the help of volunteers, core-workers and teachers dedicated to spreading the benefits of Yoga and Meditation, ‘Yoga in Daily Life’ throughout Australia is reputed as a highly efficient and well-organised not-for-profit organisation, which places a strong emphasis on ‘team-work’.
